This October is National Safe Work Month, a national campaign that encourages workplaces across Australia to focus on safe and healthy work. It is organised by Safe Work Australia, the national policy body for the development of work health and safety (WHS) policy.
Held annually every October, National Safe Work Month encourages health and safety in Australian workplaces. The initiative drives businesses nationwide to take practical steps toward eliminating job-related injuries, illnesses, and death.
In 2024, 188 workers were fatally injured while at work and 146,700 serious workers compensation claims were made in Australia. While these numbers have fallen over the last decade, it’s important to continue raising awareness for WHS and make meaningful differences in risk management.
National Safe Work Month 2026 Theme
Each year, Safe Work Australia selects a specific theme for National Safe Work Month. This creates a more focused approach to the topics discussed during this month. The theme for 2026 is Safe work is for life. This reflects the fundamental purpose of work health and safety: to protect the lives, health, and future of workers. It aims to recognise that WHS is about more than preventing harm in the present. It’s also about preventing injury, illness, and long-term harms that can affect every part of life (work, home, and future). National Safe Work Month is then split into four focus areas, with each week of October centring around one area.
These topics are:
- Week 1: For Life (why work health and safety matters). Encourages workplaces to reconnect with the purpose behind WHS and everyone’s roles in creating a safe & healthy workplace.
- Week 2: For Health (what work health and safety protects). Highlights the ways work can affect both physical and psychological health.
- Week 3: For the Future (the long-term impact). Encourages workplaces to think beyond immediate incidents and consider how work-related harm affects workers over time.
- Week 4: For All (action across all workplaces). Focuses on maintaining momentum and ensuring WHS remains a priority throughout the year.
These weekly focus areas will help workplaces explore why WHS matters, what it protects, and the practical action needed to support safe and healthy work.
Anvil Legal would like to take this month to promote a positive work safety culture. As workers’ compensation lawyers, we understand the importance of prioritising safety in the work environment. We want to remind everyone that keeping your workplace safe protects both employees and employers. We encourage everyone to get involved and take a moment to think about what safe work means to you. Even small actions can make a difference.
